Americanism Notes: It's December and as we move into the end of the first half of pur American Legion year. It is time to really show up and "Be the One". Contact members of your post or veterans in the local area to make sure they are okay. Although, Christmas is supposed to be the "happiest time of the year" many veterans are not seeing it that way. Unhappy memories, separation from family or lack of income can make it so very hard on them. They may have feelings of regrets of past mistakes or even failure as a person. Let them know they can always have hope for a better life and be there to point them to places that can help.
Many post are doing Turkey drops or meals for veterans and their families. Toy drives seem to be another outlet. Christmas parties and Santa visits do so much for some families. Many of our older veterans are in different levels of care facilities. They may be alone make time as a group to visit. One very successful program is the shoebox gifts. It has small gifts of socks, playing cards, puzzle books, etc. Just make sure if including any snacks to let the facility staff know, the veteran may not be allowed those due to health issues. Angel Tree gifts for these veterans are also a great idea. It works for large gifts like shirts, underwear, socks sweaters or even blankets.
The Department Commander and the Legion family are about to embark on the Annual Christmas Hospital Tour. They appreciate seeing as many of you that can join them and of course the veterans enjoy your visit. We all hope to get out to see you and join in these visits especially in our area.
On December 14th is the annual Army vs Navy Game. Open your post and enjoy the fellowship with other veterans, It is also a great way to bring in younger vets who may be looking for a home in the Legion family.
December is also the time to get in the first of the awards for the year. EMT, Firefighter, Law Enforcement and Chaplain are the ones that are due before the New Year. These awards are not only great recognition but can also help the awardee to in future promotions or positions.
Make sure you get your reservations and ads in for the annual Housing for Homeless dinner on January 18th. This program has been very successful for PA veterans and influential to other places around the nation. Please remember to support this terrific program.
We of the Americanism committee wish for all of you a very Merry Christmas and Happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.
