US Department of Defense Birthday
The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) celebrates its birthday on August 10th, the day in 1949 when the National Military Establishment was renamed the DoD by an amendment to the National Security Act. The DoD's origins, however, can be traced back to the Revolutionary War and the establishment of the War Department in 1789. In 1947, the National Security Act created the National Military Establishment by merging the War Department, Navy Department, and the Department of the Air Force.
