Wolff contacted a representative from the Red Cross, who provided the names of the families so we could inform them that they could come in to gather needed items, including food, clothing, housewares and furniture. Many families came to the post, and all were very appreciative. A donation box was placed in the bar area of the post for monetary donations. Between these donations, contributions from the post itself, the Sons of The American Legion and the Auxiliary, gift cards totaling about $4,000 were purchased and distributed equally among the families.

A local children’s theater troupe requested to hold a charity cabaret at the Legion for the families. This was granted, and the ballroom was provided free of charge. A dinner was created, and McRae volunteered his services as bartender. The group collected about $1,362 in donations, which was also split evenly and distributed to each family.

When Wolff was asked about these efforts, he responded, “We (Post 15) experienced a devastating fire several years ago that burned our building to the ground, and we had to rebuild from scratch. The community supported us during that time, so we felt it necessary to reach out to our neighbors and assist them as much as possible.”

This tragedy brought the community together and demonstrated The American Legion’s commitment of helping where needed.
