Course Descriptions

OFFICERS/LEADERSHIP

(ALL DAY)
This course will help you understand the roles and responsibilities of all post officers, informing them of where to find the information needed to successfully lead their posts. This will include how to set an agenda and the proper way to conduct a meeting. The leadership portion is designed to cultivate and develop officers and future officers into effective leaders.

(For Legion and SAL Officers/future Officers)

LEGION-PROGRAMS

(ALL DAY)
This course is an in-depth look at the programs available to all Posts and the Legion family that are Legion oriented, supported or generated. However, it is not a comprehensive list. We will define Legion programs and have classroom participation in a Legion program. Planning to pitfalls.

AUXILIARY-GENERAL

(ALL DAY)
Introduction into the American Legion Auxiliary and its mission, "Your Why" Why you choose to belong.

AUXILIARY-UNIT PRESIDENT

(ALL DAY)
Officer Duties, parliamentary procedures, Membership, Yearend reports.

AUXILIARY- DISTRICT PRESIDENT

(ALL DAY)
District President's duties and responsibilities, Membership, parliamentary procedures.

RIDERS

(ALL DAY)
In the morning we plan to discuss our Riders Constitution and By-Laws with a focus on the Chain of Command, the roles of our officers and our obligations to our Posts. In the afternoon our focus will be on Riding Safety to include group riding tips, hand signals, safety and CCR reporting.

SAL

(PM ONLY)
This course will explore the various Committees and Programs the SAL supports and how we can get more involved. We will cover the history of the Sons of the American Legion with a focus on how it came to be, it’s history and the importance of understanding the SAL’s role in the American Legion Family. We will discuss the impacts that the SAL plays in implementing and supporting the programs of the American Legion at the Local, District, Department and National level and specific programs that are implemented by the SAL here in the Detachment of Pennsylvania. Sharing of ideas in a round-table discussion.

SERVICE OFFICERS

(ALL DAY)
A review of the responsibilities of the Post Service Officer and how they can help their post members. The course will review how the Department Service Officer completes VA compensation and pension claims and how a Post Service Officer can collect needed documents and information. Also, in this course, we will review the PACT Act, which includes the burn pit legislation, changes to Agent Orange claims, and Camp Lejeune Water Contamination Tort Claim. The course will also provide reference material that is to be brought back to your post.

CHAPLAIN

(AM ONLY)
Course will focus how in an interfaith setting we can serve the living, comfort the afflicted and honor the dead. Particular emphasis will be placed on providing prayer and guidance for American Legion family, opening ceremonies and services at the time of death.

(For Legion, SAL and Riders Chaplains)

MEMBERSHIP/ ADJUTANT

(ALL DAY)
Learning about membership eligibility & processing of membership cards online via MyLegion. Will cover other aspects & benefits of MyLegion to assist the Post/Squadron. Class will cover the Adjutant’s responsibilities, along with going over the importance of the Post/Squadron Data Form, Officers Card, Consolidated Post/Squadron Report, meeting minutes, etc. We also briefly touch on the oversight the Post has regarding the SAL and Riders, which will include eligibility for both programs.

BYLAWS & CONSTITUTION

(ALL DAY)
This course will focus on understanding and applying the bylaws & constitution of the Department/Detachment, or the Post/Squadron in addition to focusing on how they affect the local post/squadron, and what the responsibilities of each entity at all levels of the Department/ Detachment, District, Local level. We will look at the most common issues that will occur as related to following the bylaws and constitution.
