Service Officers
Veterans don’t have to stand alone in the in their battle for benefits and medical care. The Department Service Officers will help veterans and family members weed through the paperwork and bureaucracy of government in order to get the benefits and medical care deserved. The American Legion department service officers (DSO) offer free advice and guidance for veterans who need the services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
Pennsylvania has 5 offices across the state to assist veterans; Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Wilkes-Barre, Erie and Harrisburg. The DSO’s are accredited representatives responsible for providing assistance and representation in any claim for VA benefits. They have specialized training and experience that contribute to a thorough knowledge of VA regulations and instructions, and not to mention, they are familiar with the broad spectrum of VA programs and operations. Our service officers regularly participate in workshops, seminars and conference to upgrade and enhance their skills.
If you or someone you know needs help from one of our Department Service Officers, please contact the nearest office.
The DMVA PA VetConnect objectives are to determine the needs of veterans and their beneficiary, find resources that meet those needs, and connect veterans with those resources. VetConnect Slides
The Veteran Assistance Referral Form is used by American Legion Members to seek help and assistance from a Department Service officer. If you know a veteran or family member who needs assistance or may have questions pertaining to veterans benefits simply fill out the form to the right and we’ll do the rest. The person being referred does not have to be an American Legion member.

Starting Monday, September 17, 2018, we will begin a weekly webinar series for Post Service Officers and other interested individuals. The webinar series will run every Monday night (except on holidays) throughout the year. The purpose of the webinar is to provide Post Service Officers an opportunity to interact with our Department Service Officer Staff and provide information to better serve veterans in the community and your local Post. You will be able to dial in and have a face to face conversation with our Department Service Officers. It’s an opportunity to ask questions and/or receive valuable information. Members are also welcome to join in the Monday night webinars.
The time will be 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm every Monday evening. All you need to do is sign up with your name, email address and Post number.
You will be added to our distribution list. Every Friday the log-on instructions will be sent out for the upcoming week to everyone on the distribution list. You can join using a smart phone, tablet or computer.
This is a great opportunity for Post Service Officers to find out how to better serve veterans in their post and local community. This program is open to everyone but is focused for our Post Service Officers.
